Private Sector Development & M4P
A dynamic private sector is key to increasing economic opportunities, job and wealth creation that benefit all. We are committed to encourage the growth of a private sector and medium, small and medium size enterprises (MSME) and assists developing and transition economies to mobilize the innovative capabilities of their citizens in the private sector.
Understanding private sector development at different levels is necessary to identify and undo market system constraints relevant for the poor at the regional, national and market system level. We assist governments to design policies and regulations that create a strong enabling environment for business and spur innovation and job creation. Also, we support private entrepreneurs - actors along the value chain; employing approaches such as Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P). For example, this approach has been key for transforming subsistence agriculture into farming as a business. We provide know-how for compliance with national and global regulations as well as international norms, standards and conventions such as WTO rules, including sanitary and phytosanitary measures and technical barriers to trade. Overcoming these is a prerequisite for enabling developing countries to commercialise their agricultural products both regionally as well as internationally. Also, we provide technical assistance to enhance trade strategies and build trade related knowledge and skills within key government agencies.
